Can I Buy and register a domain name without an hosting package?

January 31st, 2010 | by admin |

I want to buy/register a domain name outright and not pay for hosting package, simply to register until such time as I build a website or sell/transfer the domain to someone else. Can anyone confirm that this is common practice/suggest a good company to buy/register domains with.Am looking to pay a one off low cost fee,not ongoing monthly fee.

Yes, you can buy (register) a domain name without a hosting package. This is usually is less than ten dollars a year from most registrars. I suggest http://www.TemeculaValleyDomains.net you can get .com registrations for $6.95 per year.

Yes, you will not need a hosting package until you are ready to produce an actual web site.

You can certainly reserve your domain name without actually doing anything with it. Most registrars will charge you every 2 years for your domain registration.

Yes you can but it may be more advantageous just to start your very own blog.

You can use this blog in many ways and if you are not very good at web design, it may the most profitable.

At one time I was using C-Net page builder without the hosting, but have now put all my eggs in the Blogger basket.

    Easily!

    I like http://www.godaddy.com

http://www.123-reg.co.uk is cheapest for .co.uk domains.
Really not my favourite registrar, but cheat.

http://www.nameboy.com is great for helping you think up names, though GodAddy and others do this to a limited extent

Ah, re-read the emphasis of your question, you are thinking in terms of speculative bulk purchasing / parking of domains.

Again, Godaddy have a few interesting offer for you – like bulk discount schemes and Sedo style cash parking:

There’s also a number of sites dedicated to this /potentially/ lucrative trade. (sec…)

I’d have recommended Namespro, but it’s gone now. What a waste!

    [ addenda:
Jake's answer and link above isn't really an appropriate answer to the question but his sarcastic if vulgar take on starting a blog is rather funny, possibly hilarious. Not a serious answer but worth a laugh. I've bookmarked it :) ]
