This Is What The Internet Looks Like – Inside a Tier 1 Host

January 21st, 2010 | by admin |

Many people don’t know what the Internet is really made of. Some people thinks it’s tubes, others pulleys and levers.
Here I show you what a tier one hosting facility looks like. This is a facility much like the ones that host the webs most popular sites.
The particular rack I open is where my companies servers live.

That is the type of …
That is the type of maintenance I wish to do. For some odd reason, for me, there is a type of awesomeness that cannot be described by words alone.

How’d you get the job, and what kind of certifications did they require you to have?

    THe intneret is not …
THe intneret is not one network, it is a collection of networks working together, how important they are as a general defention is in Tiers.

ISP’s are usually TIER 2, they connect up with other TIER 2 networks using the backbones that are TIER 1. TIER1’s peer to other TIER 1 netowrks, usually through political agreements.

DNS servers are one of the most important servers needed and usually found in all tiers.

    It’s complicated lol.

    There are hundreds …
There are hundreds in that one room. But even with all the server noise I think it mostly gets drowned out by the massive AC in the room. Sometimes I have a hard time even hearing if a particular server is running or not!

    You mean it isn’t …
You mean it isn’t full duplex, or symmetrical. 1:1 refers to its contention ratio, which means how many people are on the line.

    Haha, I lovee the …
Haha, I lovee the DL380. In Japan you can buy them for $20 (the G2) and $50 for the G3. Great stuff. If you think those are heavy, try lifting the IBM x360 to the top of a rack, or a 3000VA UPS. Holy Crap!

    what your saying is …
what your saying is what it would look to the client. The download speed of the client is the upload speed of the server.

What here could possibly be classified. Nothing special about the server layout. It looks just like my data center.

    I’m not sure if …
I’m not sure if your confusing terms. From what my network class states (cisco networking), an upload is when information is transfered from a client to a sever, while a download is the complete reverse. In a peer to peer network, all computers can act as client or sever, while in a heiacrhy base network there is typically a centerized sever.

We’ve got some DL360 running too, in my eyes, these are one of the greatest x86 systems you can find. Very easy to manage and ow yeah we don’t need to use screws.

Yes but your connection wont have a 1:1 ratio (meaning their connection is 20mb down and up).

Upload being the important one for a server seen as they are uploading the content to who requested it.

Thanks. I am a big fan of DL380s and DL360s. We have had great luck with them. They sure are heavy though. I nearly broke my back mounting the top ones.
