How to make a virtual host, so i can test exe programs and avoid virus infection in my real system?

READ before answering please! 
In vista how to make a virtual host temporally to install all the software i think it may have spyware, virus etc. I want to use it on a free space that is not portioned yet and is free.
Be detailed i am kinda dummy on this.
You can download this (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx) and load an operating system inside of it. You will need to make sure that you have the operating system disc to install it though.
Alos this link (http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Microsoft-Virtual-PC) will show you how to install and create what is call a Virtual Machine
