what is virtual server hosting in lamens terms please? and also do i need any hardware for it? ?

im stuck on a question about virtual server hosting.
i need to know what it is, how much it costs and whether i need any hardware to install to work it! can you help me please x

If you are looking at setting up a website then The pros of free are obviosly the cost. The Cons are that you hardly get customer support and the site is liekly to go down a lot.
